Speak Loudly

So I was thinking: When I was younger the books that I read were the Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, and everything by R.L. Stine.  Don't forget the books you HAD to read in school, like: To Kill a Mockingbird (banned list), and Catcher in the Rye (banned list).

So the books I had to read in class were classics.  The others, for fun.  Now it seems like as the years go on the books for young adults are proving something, sending life lesson messages, stories that make you think.  Stories that make you want to change the way society is trying to run things.

You don't have to be mean to be popular, you don't have to pick on "different" people to fit in and you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.  These books should be  promoted at schools not banned.  What is happening?  You can't shield children or young adults from everything, and the more you try the more they will rebel, or the more you keep them from knowing the worse life will be.

These stories need to be told, and I think that banning books is ridiculous!  People have to stop being so temperamental on what is being released for teens and children to read.  You can't sit there and say that you didn't read Catcher in the Rye or To Kill a Mockingbird when you were younger!  Now you think it's too much?  Come on now.

I'm just a little flabbergasted by the accusations of the message these books are supposedly sending out to teens.  They need to know about this stuff.  For an instance, with Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, girls need to know that it is ok to talk about it, that they SHOULD tell someone if they are raped.  How about Willow by Julia Hoban, you need someone to talk to when something is bothering you.  I think if anything, these books are letting the younger generation know that they are not alone.

We shouldn't be banning these stories, we should be getting them out there even more!!!  I'm going to stop this post before I just keep going on for days.  I just wish there was a way to get the stories out there and not be banned.  If I had the talent all these authors had, I would write a story about my life growing up.  I was a terrible kid, mean to my mother, went through a lot and I don't regret a thing I ever did because it has made me the strong woman I am today.  I bet you my story would be banned too, and isn't that sad?  It's REAL!

Forgive my rambling and typos.  I am really heated!

Books, books and more books!

Ok so I did it. FINALLY.  I went out and got the two books I've been wanting to get.  I must say, I forgot how pricey books were after only buying from used book stores.  But I can't tell you how good it feels to have TWO new releases that I wanted so bad.  Happy Birthday to me!

I am 40 pages away from being done with Fever by Laurie Halse Anderson, and you better believe these two will be tackled this weekend.  I dont' want to finish them so fast, because I like to savor new books, but I know they are going to be that good!!!

I know, I am out of control.  I just have a lot to say.

So I was looking up more books and I found this on a site..

Did you know that the book Eclipse is No.1 on the final teens top ten list? :

1. Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling

3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

4. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

5. Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson

6. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

7. The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

8. Extras by Scott Westerfeld

9. Before I Die by Jenny Downham

10. Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson

Ok so I have pretty much heard or read most of those books.  I don't know what my problem is, but I have the Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and I couldn't finish it.  I am thinking I just need to pick it up and give it another try.  I think it was something about the two girls in the beginning that kind of weirded me out.

And can I also express my disagreement with the fact that Laurie is at the bottom!!! (GRRR) And Libba Bray as well............. come on... who is doing the counting of these polls.. that just can't be right!  Also, where is Suzanne Collins on this list, hello.. Hunger Games? FANTASTIC BOOK! And Carrie Ryan too!!

Ok I need to stop, I can keep going.. perhaps I shall make my own list!

To be continued.......

Hi, my name is Terra and I am a book addict!

book⋅worm/ˈbʊkˌwɜrm/ [book-wurm]

1.a person devoted to reading or studying.

Yes, I am indeed a bookworm.

Now I have never been a reader. I even hated reading in school. I missed out BIG TIME! There are so many great books out there, so many fabulous mind trips to take. Not only is reading a getaway for me, it's a release. I have found that reading has really helped lowering my stress level. My husband would like to thank all you wonderful writers! ;-)

I only began reading about two years ago. I was looking for a new hobby, something I do quite often, I have a LOT of unfinished projects.

I was talking to a friend of mine that was on my case hard core about picking up the Twilight book. I go to the bookstore, find the book, and thought to myself, "OH NO WAY!!!" I called my friend while at the bookstore and said, "This is in the kiddie section!" She was avid on telling me that it is the GREATEST BOOK and I had to give it a shot. Needless to say, after hanging up the phone, I left the bookstore..... without the book. There was just noway I was about to buy a children's book.

Now, mind you that I said I was never into reading. Months go by and finally while doing some house shopping, at Walmart (don't laugh, that store rocks for house supplies!) I saw the book on the shelf. I finally got the book. I did not put that book down until I was done, except to sleep. I was hooked. I then finished all four books and was on a mission to read more "vamp" books. My next series was The House of Night series. Though similar, still so extremely different. I was in LOVE with reading and vampires. I have yet to venture outside the YA books (see, I know the lingo now, sort of... ) because there are so many that I am finding out about. But I have moved on from ONLY reading about vampires. I am a member of a great book site and I wouldn't be so knowledgeable about books without it. I have since been to new and used bookstores all over Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa, my husband has had to build me a bookshelf, and I am starting to run out of room already.

So two years later, here I am. Pushing book after book, website after website on my friends. I have become that nagging friend saying, "YOU HAVE TO CHECK THIS BOOK OUT!!"

I am a book addict, and damn proud of it. Keep reading my blog, I have only just begun to tell you my adventures in reading and the love and respect I have for the talented authors behind the books.

I got the FEVA
[info]terra_mae80
And no, it's not for more cow bell!

I have been absolutely HOOKED on anything written by Laurie Halse Anderson.  As all my wonderful friends know, I have a sickness........ for reading.

Here's a little story on how I got into Laurie's writing...

My husband and I were on our way home from dropping a friend off at the airport and what did I see? A bookstore that I have left unexplored.  Walking through, dead set on the YA section, to my dismay it was minimal.  There I saw it, that red twisted pencil with the blue eraser!  I gasped and grabbed it.  Lucky for my bank account it was a used book.  I have only read the great reviews about it so as soon as I got home I read and read until I was finished.  That's right, one day I was done.  I was so blown away by the story and the characters that I was on a mission to pick up all of the books written by Laurie.

Because of the economy right now, it's a bit hard to go out to the major bookstores and buy all of the books I want.  So I found yet another unexplored bookstore near my house in tempe.  There was where I hit the jack pot!  Not only did I find the two missing books of my Holly Black series, I also found, Catalyst, Speak and Fever.

I finished both Speak and Catalyst, reading like the book was going to vanish. Now I am about to finish Fever, and I don't want it to end.

I never want Laurie's books to end.  You feel like you become a part of the story, you get lost in her writing and the characters and you really feel as though you know them.  I cheer, I cry and I get angry. Now the only book I was really angry with was Speak.  That jock *expletive deleted* really had me wanting to jump in there and kick his BUTT!  I can't tell you how excited I am to see Melinda finally speak in the showing of the movie on Lifetime this Saturday!  I know I've seen the movie before but I didn't put two and two together since I have started reading.

Now before I just start rambling randomness, I am going to end the post. HAHAH
